Belarus, Cuba sign agreement on recognition of academic credentials

MINSK, 18 November (BelTA) – Belarusian Education Minister Andrei Ivanets and Cuban Vice Minister of Higher Education Miriam Alpizar Santana signed an intergovernmental agreement on mutual recognition of academic credentials, BelTA has learned.

The document provides for joint consultations on the implementation of the provisions of the agreement, notifying each other about changes in the education systems of the two states, the creation of new educational institutions, the exchange of names and samples of education documents issued in both countries, lists of accredited educational institutions. So far the universities of Belarus and Cuba have 10 direct contracts. This is a good foundation for the further development of relations. We hope that by visiting a number of our universities, namely Belarusian State university, Belarusian State Economic University, Minsk State Linguistic University and Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics, you will get an idea of the areas of training and scientific focus. The intergovernmental agreement that we signed will be a good basis for closer interaction between our countries," Andrei Ivanets said, welcoming the guests.

As promising areas of cooperation, the parties outlined: joint research into drugs and pharmaceutical substances; development and manufacture of medical products and devices for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the field of cardiac surgery, traumatology and orthopedics, oncology, dentistry; development and production of computer-oriented measuring systems and measuring instruments; study of the problems of electromagnetic safety of the population and electromagnetic ecology of the habitat in the conditions of intensive development of new-generation mobile communication systems and services. "Here the most important thing is to determine the format of this interaction. We are ready to cooperate both within the framework of science and technology parks, which are actively developing in Belarus and in Cuba, and to consider the possibility of creating joint ventures, including in Cuba. We are very interested not just in performing scientific research, but in the final result, which can be commercialized or used to solve socially important problems," Andrei Ivanets said.

During the meeting a proposal was put forward on the possibility of participation of higher education institutions of the two countries in competitions of Belarusian-Cuban science and technology projects in priority areas of cooperation.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Cuba to Belarus Santiago Perez Benitez expressed readiness to assist in establishing direct contacts with institutions of higher education of Cuba teaching information technology and to organize an online meeting with representatives of Cuban universities to discuss joint educational programs, academic mobility and scientific cooperation.
