Prior to the return of the face-to-face and/or blended modality at public and private universities, Education Minister Rosendo Serna affirmed the Government will guarantee the quality of education at the university level.

In remarks to TV Peru on Thursday, Serna stated —from a technical point of view— that there are aspects which need to be improved in terms of higher education.

For example, the Cabinet member argued that it is necessary to modify the operating law of the National Superintendence of Higher University Education (Sunedu) in terms of fines imposed on public universities.

In this sense, the government official asked "how is a public entity going to fine another public entity?" adding that it is the "State against the State."

Moreover, he argued that Sunedu should be made up of technocrats who are not on one side or the other, so as to improve the quality of basic education at universities.

"All of society wants universities to be of quality," he noted.

Serna considered that Sunedu must exist, but with corrective measures, adding that it should adapt to a rational autonomy.

Concerning the university reform, he pointed out that the Government is in favor of it.

Regarding free admission to universities, he said that sector's officials are working on a pilot scheme, which contributes to allocating resources to universities.

"We will see what social stratum is assisted and, based on that, we will possibly launch the proposal next year," he concluded.
